What is Nutritional Therapy

Nutritional therapy combines science with naturopathy in order to return the patient to a state of good health. It's a holistic therapy approach taht combines conventional medicine with complementary therapies and is aimed at addresseing the root cause of the problem rather than only treating the symptoms.  Nutritional treatment is used instead of strong pharmaceuticals to restore the body's balance.

Nutritional therapists use treatments in the form of whole foods and specialised supplements to rebalance the body’s system for optimum health.  Biochemical tests (urine, saliva, blood and hair samples) may be necessary in order to get to the root of your health problems, as they identify imbalances and dysfunctions in normal physiology.

Food influences repair, growth and body functions and can affect energy levels, mood and even personality. As a result of intensified farming and the abundance of processed foods these days, it's difficult to maintain a well balanced diet. Our stressful lifestyles also make it  challenging to obtain the desired nutrition from the foods we eat, leading us to feeling run down, exhausted and prone to infections.

Many people now realise the importance of a balanced diet and believe they can achieve it by reasearching online or self medication.  While it is a positive thing to become aware of the importance of a healthy dietary lifestyle, they often fail to achieve their goals and return to their old way of life simply because these changes were not sustainable or customised to their specific nutritional needs.

What makes this special at MediClinic

MediClinic also recognises your right to 'own' your health, which is why we work with you to develop tailored holistic therapy programmes to meet your specific requirements at one of our clinics in Guildford or Wimbledon.  Instead of restrictive "diets" and unrealistic nutritional changes, you are able to incorporate the therapy at your own pace, so that changes in the food you eat are more sustainable in the long term.  These changes can make you realise how enjoyable, simple and powerful good nutrition can be.

Nutritional therapy can address a variety of health issues and making dietary changes often leads to a substantial reduction in symptoms. The main health issues nutrition can help with are: allergies/asthma, arthritis/osteoporosis, candida, gut inflammation, chronic fatigue/ low energy, depression, diabetes, digestive complaints, eating disorders, hay fever/sinusitis, headaches and migraines, heart health (blood pressure, cholesterol, homocysteine), hormonal imbalances (PMS, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, menopause), Food Intolerances/allergies, autoimmune conditions (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis), irritable bowel syndrome, liver issues, pre-conceptual care/fertility/pregnancy and post-natal nutrition, skin problems, sports Nutrition, thyroid disorders and weight problems.

Zest4Life

Zest4life is an exciting new concept in weight management based on a low GL dietary approach.  This approach is based on the work of one of Britains's most respected nutritionist - Patrick Holford - and has been designed to provide the highest level of support and personalisation to fill the need for a more intelligent and healthy approach to weight loss and management.

The 12 week programme is run by  our professional weight loss coach and nutritionist Magalie Papageorge.  We have seen  high sucess rates for weight loss, energy improvement, regained vitality and improved health scores and these have all been achieved within the 12 week programme.  Zest4life differs from normal weight loss programmes as we provide each participant the opportunity to re-learn how to eat normally and healthily in a way that they can continue for the rest of their lives.  The programmes therefore combine nutrition and health education with personal recommendations and dietary advice, coaching, changing behaviours and resolving emotional aspects.

You are welcome to attend one of the weekly seminars for free and see for yourself before joining the programme.  These programmes can either be completed in a group environment or on a 1-1 basis.  We are curretnly running group courses commence in Guildford and Wimbledon.  Please call for further details.

Consultation process

Prior to consultation:
Before attending your first nutritional therapy consultation, a detailed questionnaire will be sent to you, the purpose of which is to gather information about your medical history, diet and lifestyle.  This should be completed and returned two days before the consultation - either by fax, post or email - in order to help the nutritional therapist provide you with the most suitable holistic therapy and the best value for money.

Initial  Consultation:
The initial nutritional therapy consultation, which is done at our centres in Guildford or Putney, lasts up to 60 minutes and is divided into three parts.

  1. Part 1 - Discussion of your questionnaire in order to establish your current nutritional status. We, then determine your health priorities for this visit.
  2. Part 2 - Discussion and explaination of possible contributing factors to your health concerns with a variety of visual aids to make the explainations as easy to understand as possible.
  3. Part 3 - Decising a holistic therapy treatment plan, including a dietary and lifestyle programme. If a particular area requires further investigation, appropriate biochemical testing can be conducted at MediClinic. An electronic report follows a few days later, which summarises the points discussed in the consultation and outlines the customised nutritional treatment and lifestyle programme along with some useful handouts and meal suggestions.

At this point, you take an active role in your health and nutritional treatment plan and need to ensure that the recommended changes are carried out over the weeks until we see you for a follow-up.

Follow Up Consultations
A follow-up nutritional therapy consultation is usually booked four weeks after the initial consultation to discuss progress, assessment of symptoms, and make ongoing nutritional changes if necessary. Generally, people require between three and four consultations, although it depends on the individual.  More nutritioanl therapy consultations could be necessary if, as often happens, the biochemical imbalances have built up over a number of years of bad diet and nutrition.  Please contact us with any questions on holistic therapy, or to book a nutritional treatment consultation.
