What is FLU?

Flu is a highly contagious acute viral infection that affects people of all ages. Flu epidemics occur mainly in the winter months and a vaccine is produced every year based on the strains of flu virus expected to be circulating, to prevent and reduce the number of cases.

Symptoms

Flu starts suddenly with fever, chills, headache, aching muscles and a cough or other respiratory symptoms.

Why Should I have a Flu Vaccination?

The influenza virus can cause serious illness and death, especially in the very young and the elderly and those with a poor immunity. As these influenza viruses are easily transmitted via close contact or crowded situations, those of us that use public transport, work in office situations or with the general public are at high risk of getting the flu virus. Other high risk people are: people over the age of 65 yrs, those with medical problems like asthma, emphysema, heart disease, low immunity and diabetic patients.

What is Swine Flu?

Swine flu is the common name given to a new strain of influenza (flu). It is called swine flu because it is thought to have originated in pigs, but this is not certain.

The most common symptoms are a fever, sore throat, diarrhoea, headache, feeling generally unwell and a dry cough. In other words, the symptoms are very similar to seasonal (regular) flu. Most people recover within a week, even without special treatment. THE SEASONAL FLU JAB DOES NOT PROTECT YOU AGAINST SWINE FLU.

How can I prevent catching a cold or ‘flu this winter?

There are no known cures for colds and flu, so prevention is the goal. The most effective way of preventing the flu is to get the  flu vaccination; but the following pointers may go along way to keep your immune system fighting fit and avoiding winter illness:

  • Wash your hands often
  • Don’t touch your face as viruses on our hands enter the body through the eyes, nose or mouth
  • Drink plenty of fluids to flush out toxins and re-hydrate you
  • Get fresh air. Central heating dries you out and makes you more susceptible to cold and flu viruses
  • Do regular aerobic exercise to boost your immune system and  the body’s natural virus- killing ability
  • Eat foods containing phytochemicals: dark green, red and yellow fruits and vegetables contain super boosting vitamins.
  • Eat yoghurt for the beneficial bacteria which boost the immune system against flu
  • DONT SMOKE! Statistics show smokers get more severe and more frequent colds. Even passive smokers (especially children) are affected.
  • Cut alcohol consumption- alcohol dehydrates the body and also affects the liver which is the body’s filtering system, thereby increasing the time it takes to eliminate toxins from your body
  • RELAX- taking time out for enjoyment and relaxation simulates your level of  interleukins (leaders in the immune system response against cold and flu viruses)
  • Watch your nutrition and ensure you are following a health diet.
